Civil Rights Advocacy

Max David Hellman started MDH LAW, PLLC, because Mr. Hellman has an intense passion for helping others; equal justice under the law and protecting individual constitutional rights of all persons defines MDH LAW and its practice.  It seeks to help those through extensive pro bono representation and dedicates at least 25% of its practice to pro bono work.

MDH LAW, PLLC, primarily focuses on ethically and cordially representing its clients while fighting respectfully for civil rights and personal liberty.  Mr. Hellman does a significant amount of pro bono work and believes everyone should be entitled to quality representation for a fair price.  MDH LAW, PLLC, seeks to promote ethics, respect, and tolerance in the legal profession and supports progressive causes, both in the community and nationally.

Max David Hellman founded MDH LAW, PLLC, at the beginning of 2017.  Mr. Hellman earned his law degree in 2011 from Pacific McGeorge School of Law, where he graduated Order of the Coif and third in his class.  Mr. Hellman served as an editor for the McGeorge Law Review in his second year of law school, eventually going on to serve as Chief Articles Editor for the McGeorge Law Review Board of Editors in his third year.  While working on the law review, Mr. Hellman published his first article, Barber v. Thomas: The Supreme Court’s Interpretation of the Federal “Good Time Credits” Statute is Undermining Sentencing Reform, 42 MCGEORGE L. REV 873 (2011).  Mr. Hellman also worked as an intern for the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office and the Federal Defenders for the Eastern District of California.  He then went on to extern fulltime on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals for the Honorable Consuelo M. Callahan during his third year of law school.

After law school, Mr. Hellman served as a federal clerk for the Honorable James K. Singleton, a United States Federal Judge for the District of Alaska, working on criminal trials and assisting the Judge with Ninth Circuit appellate work.  During that time, he published his second article, The Protest Heard Around the World: Why the Supreme Court’s Decision in Snyder v. Phelps Protects Too Much Speech, Challenges the Court’s Historical Balance Between Free Speech and State Tort Claims, and Leaves Tort Victims With Little Remedy, 49 CAL. W. L. REV. 51 (2012).  Next, he moved to Tulsa to clerk on the Tenth Circuit for the Honorable Stephanie K. Seymour, a United States Federal Judge for the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Mr. Hellman eventually worked as the Judge’s career and only clerk, allowing him the unique experience of working closely with Judge Seymour, drafting Tenth Circuit opinions and advising the Judge on federal cases.  Following his time on the Tenth Circuit and prior to opening MDH LAW, PLLC, Mr. Hellman worked in the fall of 2016 for Rathod Mohamedbhai LLC, working as a federal litigator in the Federal District Court of Colorado.

Background

Mr. Hellman attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA, graduating with honors.  He studied Black History Post-Reconstruction, as well as United States History, Political Science, and Philosophy.  While there, he interned for the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, working closely with attorneys assessing benefits for those at or below the poverty line.  Mr. Hellman also started as a freshman for Wheaton’s nationally ranked men’s soccer team and he was also actively involved in the performing arts, including regularly performing in an acoustic guitar duo and slam poetry on Campus.  After graduating from Wheaton College, he briefly worked for Harmon Law Office, one of the biggest property firms in the Boston area.  Mr. Hellman eventually served as an intern for a corporate lobbying and law firm, Serlin Haley, LLP, in Boston, MA, before going to law school.  Mr. Hellman enjoys helping others, writing both comedy and scholarly articles, cycling, swimming, and working and sharing experiences with those who have suffered trauma, particularly traumatic brain injuries.

What we do?

Mr. Hellman has worked on discrimination, police brutality, and other federal civil rights cases.  He eventually opened his civil rights and criminal defense practice in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Since opening, MDH LAW, PLLC, has secured a settlement in federal court and has won several motions in family court in Tulsa County.  MDH LAW, PLLC, primarily takes criminal defense, civil rights, and family law cases.  Mr. Hellman also takes state and federal appellate cases and is admitted to practice in the State of Oklahoma, the Western and Northern Federal Districts of Oklahoma, the District of Colorado, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
